Heart Concert Review - 11/2/2012

To see more photos click here.

Well, on Friday, November 2nd, 2012, I saw Heart at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, FL, completing my goal of seeing the JessieLou Holy Trinity live (I saw Lita Ford in October and Pat Benatar in June 2009). It was a great show and Ann and Nancy were amazing and flawless as usual, but you know, I saw Lita at the trashiest venue, Rush in a huge arena with over 20,000 people, and when I saw Kelly Clarkson, I was sitting in front of a group of drunk women, so it says a lot when I tell you that last Friday, THE FREAKS WERE OUT!

Before I get into the concert itself, I will explain how I got into Heart to begin with. I have heard their 80’s hits like “These Dreams”, “Alone”, “What About Love”, etc. on the radio when I was a kid but I didn't know who sang them until years later (this was also the case with a lot of Journey and Steve Winwood hits). When I started listening to American Top 40 Flashback: The 80’s back in 2006, I recognized a lot of the Heart songs that came on, also not to mention before that I recognized a lot of their songs performed on American Idol (remember Carrie Underwood’s version of “Alone”?), plus someone on M4B Charts Central had a show on the now-defunct radio station Variety FM 104 called the Back When Top 10, where the first hour he would play the top 10 from a year in the 80’s and the second hour a year in the 90’s. He played a lot of Heart songs that I liked very much. However, it wasn't until the spring of 2007 when I went to the sadly defunct Virgin Megastore in Orlando, FL, when I decided to buy Heart’s Greatest Hits 1985-1995 album. When I came home, I listened to it from start to finish and I was IN LOVE. Then I went back and listened to all of their albums and I loved almost all of them and really the rest is history.

The amphitheater itself was very nice; I did not get a shirt, as I already own a vintage Heart concert tee from their 1981 tour. I got it at St. Mark’s Place in NYC. And that folks is the “JessieLou Brags” segment of this review.

This venue was smaller than the venue where I saw Rush back in 2010, but there still was a lot of people, and OF COURSE I had to be seated next to the most obnoxious person in the venue. It wasn't a big deal to me as I would tolerate a Wal-Mart-loving Prince fan for my favorite artists, but this person was still nuts. I will explain in further detail about this person later on in the review. By the way, my seats ruled!

The opening act was Shawn Colvin, who smashed up the charts in 1997 with a GREAT song that I grew up with – “Sunny Came Home”. She is very talented and I totally respect her as an artist. With that said, she was boring. It’s nothing against her but her non-“Sunny Came Home” songs aren’t my kind of music.

Now it’s show time! About 45 minutes later, Heart came on and opened with one of their most recent singles, “Fanatic”. It was AWESOME! After that they performed their 1978 single, “Heartless” as well as, much to my surprise, “What About Love”! Considering how that's one of my top five all-time favorite Heart songs, this was a VERY pleasant surprise. I've watched a lot of Heart concerts on TV since I really started getting into their music back in 2007, and they have NEVER done any of their 80’s songs except for the occasional “Alone” or “These Dreams”. It was a stripped down version, which was great, but I was hoping for the 80’s arena rock-like sound. Their 1985 self-titled album is one of my all time favorites and it has spoiled me a bit. After this they performed two more new tracks – my favorite song off their new album, Fanatic, called “Mashallah”, and “59 Crunch”.

Now let’s get back to the lady I was sitting next to. At one point she got up to get a drink, and when Heart performed “Even It Up”, she came back DRUNK, holding a drink in her hand screaming and not only almost bumped into me to the point where I could've gotten hurt, but she spilled some of her drink in my hair! NOT. COOL. Again, I don't mind having to deal with obnoxious people for my favorite artists, but don't interfere me when I'm trying to watch them! GOD.

Next they performed one of my favorite 70’s-era songs from them, “Straight On”, as well as “Dog & Butterfly”, another Fanatic track, “Walkin’ Good”, and then one of my favorite performances of the night is when they performed “These Dreams”! Everyone talks about what a fantastic vocalist Ann Wilson is and I agree 110%; she is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, but Nancy Wilson is an amazing singer in her own right as well. I always loved her vocals on “These Dreams” and other Heart songs she sang vocals on such as “There’s The Girl”, “Will You Be There (In The Morning)”, and “Stranded”.

Next they performed one of the greatest songs ever made, “Alone”, and I took video of it but the quality isn't very good as it was taken on my iPod touch.

Good news: the next song they did was “Dear Old America” and I finally figured out how to take video with my regular camera during this performance! Bad news: I ended up deleting it accidentally after the show. MEH.

Next they performed arguably their three biggest classic rock staples – “Crazy On You”, “Barracuda”, and “Magic Man”. When they performed those songs, it should come as no surprise that the crowd went CRAZY. I took video of “Barracuda” as shown below; fortunately clumsy me didn’t delete this one!

They wrapped up this AWESOME show with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”, which was interesting as Lita also closed her show with a cover (Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild”). I know I’m going to piss off A LOT of people when I say this but I could never really get into Zeppelin. I respect them and I know they’ve influenced some of my favorite artists such as Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, and of course Heart, but I just couldn’t get into them. With that said, I thought their cover ruled!

Overall, it was an awesome night and I’d totally see them again. However, as I said in my Kelly Clarkson review, I want to see all of my other favorites before I see anyone a second time.
